March 2010

While sat watching some crap on the tv i began sketching down an arcade not for any reason, i was just bored (soaps rot the brain you know). ANNNNNYHOOOO, this idea was still in my head a few days later and i ended up passing the idea to stu who thought building an arcade with games to play would be a rather good so thats where it began.

March 2010

I sat with a 3d package and started creating an arcade hall, ive ended up with a round neon room with chrome and nice futuristic lights around the outside. very simple textures finished it off. Still not 100% sure its what i want but i'll go with it for now.

April 2010

Now that i have the arcade hall iam going to need some arcade to put in. Easiest way to start is to grab some textures from excisting arcades. After a bit of sniffing around the net i found the mame arcade with loads of 3d models of arcades, i swiped the textures and build a low poly model of an arcade. I really want to keep them as low as possible so i can have lots on screen at the same time.

April 2010

Ive kept myself busy bulding lots of cabinets, again iam keeping them nice n low poly to help with speed. Ive now got a nice collection so i think i'll move onto fluff objects to help populate the room.

April 2010

Next up is the fluff objects to populate the room, I started with 1 pinball machine nice and low polygon, textured it up and duplicated it placing different textures on it so i now have 9. That will probably do for now me thinks.

April 2010

Spent another week or so building more fluff objects, air hockey - pool table - can and sweety machines - slot machines and a penny falls machine. I wanted to build a horse racing betting game i remember ( think it was called derby day ) but i cant find any reference for it anywhere. Bugger. ooo i build a chrome bin too :D.

April 2010

Ok , time to move to the outside now. I dont just want a room i also want you to be able to wonder outside a little and see the blue sky and beach... my memories of going down the arcades was south shields in the north east of england... ahh lovely. The first thing i build was a mr whippy ice cream van, they where everywhere when i was a kid so i had to add one of those. A few palm trees and a beach also done this week.

April 2010

Decided to populate the arcade with everything i'd built. Added a change booth in the centre and some asteroids neon on the cieling. Iam still not sure about the look of the room tho, it doesnt look 80's enough at the moment. Maybe i need to rethink it a little...

May 2010

Been a busy busy bee these last few weeks, ive completely rebuild the room. It now looks dirty with stained carpet and stained walls and iam much happier with it. Ive also added some simple neon and 80's posters around the room to fill in the boring walls. This is defo more how i imagined it originally.

May 2010

After seeing a few screenshots stu said he'd like todo a playable pennyfalls machine so i sat for a few hours and build a little cabinet with a moving wall and a 2p/10p piece. He send me a demo and it works really well so far. There's still a few bugs but its working ... hoorah.

June 2010

Ok time togo back to the outside area again, ive now made it larger and decided to add some shops and a burger stall. Computer shop was first with some 8bit computers in the window. Next i built a chippy and a icecream shop and finally an old style record shop. Still lacking a few things to make it look busy so i added some little shallie type things, shuggy boats and pool in the middle of the shops with seats/posters banners hanging between posts. Its really coming on now.

June 2010

Here's a few more shots of the outside area, craftwork, frankie goes to hollywood posters and the computer shop can be seen.

Ive also added a neon atari sign and some pacman signs about the arcade.

June 2010

There was still too much sky in the outside area so ive added some rides just to fill it up a bit.

I grabbed some images of a waltzer ride and built the side of it and added a slide and rollercoaster track. I doubt the rollercoaster cars will move along it but it looks nice and adds a funfair feel to the area.

I also added some rubbish on the ground outside, it all looked a bit too clean.

June 2010

Just when i thought the outside looked finished i decided to add a few more bits n bobs. I need something moving outside so ive built a cages ride (meteor was also its name i think) and a divebombers ride. I think that should be about it for the modeling, next its time to start looking at doing some games to play, that is the whole point of this after all isnt it :D

June 2010

With the world cup starting my time is being eaten up watching it ...COME ON ENGLAND, but iam still finding time todo some bits. I decided to build the horse betting game from memory and iam pretty happy this is how it looked.

June 2010

Here's a close up shot of the computer shop, ive added a few more computers in the window for a bit of variety.

Ive also added a few more posters to fill in the spaces a bit.

Iam thinking of adding some tv's with a few choice speccy/c64 games on them, not sure yet tho.

June 2010

Here's the other side of the outside square, an icecream shop, hotdog/burger stand and a spillers record shop.

June 2010

Iam now just adding bits and pieces until we are ready to start doing the games themselves.

A copy of zzap64 has been left on the snooker table and ive also added a little jukebox next to the change booth.
